OTTAWA (NEWS 1130) – Businesses will be able to benefit from the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy program for a little while longer.

The program is being extended beyond June to continue to support employers and workers who are struggling amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Friday.

More details, including when the program will be extended until, are set to be released in the coming days.

Trudeau also said the federal government will be creating an Industry Strategy Council, which will help determine how best to support the hardest hit sectors.

These announcements come after new job numbers were released, showing Canada lost nearly two million jobs last month. The unemployment rate now sits at 13 per cent — the second worst on record.

More to come.
