Residents of Wood Buffalo received an update on the boil water advisory.
Speaking at the virtual townhall on May 21, Deputy CAO Matthew Hough said Alberta Health Services could lift the advisory soon.
“We are expecting that the boil water advisory will be lifted in a number of weeks for the entire area.”
AHS enforced the advisory for Wood Buffalo when floodwaters impacted its potable water supply on April 27, 2020.
On May 17, the municipal staff at the Water Treatment Plant started flushing the 375-kilometre system with elevated levels of chlorine.

Hough maintained tap water is safe to drink so long as residents bring it to a rolling boil for at least a minute.
He added the RMWB worked on a number of activities concurrently so the province could lift the advisory earlier than the original 120-day estimate.

As for the return of recycling, Hough said the RMWB will follow guidance from AHS and wait for the go-ahead.
“We are determining what staffing requirements and safety measures must be in place for us to receive recyclable material at our landfill site.”
He said the Municipality continues to prepare for the relaunch of programs and services as Alberta gradually rolls back COVID-19 restrictions.
