As Alberta enters Stage 2 of its Relaunch, the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) unveiled its strategy.
The multi-phase plan begins on June 19 as the province emerges from the shutdown linked to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The RRC released a tentative re-opening schedule for MacDonald Island Park and the Anzac Recreation Centre presented by CNOOC.
Gradual re-opening
CEO Graig Walsh said the health, safety, and well-being of staff and community member is at the forefront of the relaunch.
“During this time our team is focused on returning to operations safely and rolling out new plans as quickly as possible to support the guidelines provided to us by the Government of Alberta.”
The following is a timeline for amenities at MacDonald Island Park:
- June 19 – Legacy Dodge Fitness Centre and Indoor Running Track
- June 26 – Canadian Natural Arena #2, CNOOC Nexen Fieldhouses, High-Performance Training Centre, Indoor Turf Field House, Don Scott McMurray Law Office Badminton Centre, Squash & Racquetball Courts, Legacy Dodge Field and SMS Equipment Stadium
- July 6: Syncrude Aquatic Centre (specific re-opening schedule coming soon)
A re-opening date for the Pepsi Climbing Wall and Kirschner Family Community Art Gallery is also coming soon.
Indoor Playground and Kid’s Club House would open when appropriate.
The following is a timeline for amenities at the Anzac Recreation Centre presented by CNOOC:
- June 19 – Fitness Centre and Christina River Enterprises Running Track
- June 26 – Field House
Discussions about re-opening the arena are ongoing.
The Keyera Playground will open when appropriate.
Syncrude MI Summer Camps will go ahead at both locations.
The RRC will release details and registration information next week.
Visitors will see new procedures and processes in place in the region’s recreation centres, including additional screening measures.
Walsh said the RRC will balance new measures with the needs of guests and the desire to return to normalcy.
“As we navigate through this experience together, we anticipate that things may look and feel a bit different for our guests. We understand the community may be feeling some excitement and nervousness, we thank everyone for their patience as we prepare for another great summer of fun with our health and safety in mind.”
Phase One of the RRC’s re-opening begins June 19.
