A local pet store aims to raise funds for the Fort McMurray SPCA.
Pet Valu Downtown Fort McMurray organized ‘Giving Back Month’ in support of the non-profit organization.
The COVID-19 pandemic impacted charities like the SPCA putting several fundraising events on hold.
Public health orders from the Alberta government are set to lapse in August.
Franchise co-owner Ryan Pitchers said they had to cancel their annual Paw Month in April due to COVID-19.
“Many of the fundraising events [SPCA] counts on to cover operating costs have been cancelled because of COVID-19 yet they still continue to bring in and care for pets.”
Despite a delayed start, Pitchers said ‘Giving Back Month’ is in full swing at the downtown store.
He added the SPCA will receive one dollar from every purchase of select cat and dog food, or flea and tick protection.
“We’re very excited about the support we are already receiving from our customers. They’re very committed to helping [pets] in need and we’re so pleased to do our part to help pets who need a second chance.”
Customers may also make monetary donations of $10 or more.
“When customers come into the store and donate $10 or more, they’ll receive some swag: A scarf for their dog, ball, handkerchief, treats, or towels, so they’re quite a few different things that we’ll be giving to customers who donate.”
Pitchers added those who donate at least $25 will receive a free dog wash at their location.
He said they hope to present the Fort McMurray SPCA with a cheque once they tally all donations.
“Anything that we can do to assist them, especially through the [COVID-19] times, [and] being a pet store we support our local rescue.”
The Pet Valu Downtown Fort McMurray store is in the Northern Lights Shopping Centre on Franklin Ave.
