Fort McMurray Catholic School Division (FMCSD) will offer a two different virtual learning styles for the 2020/21 school year.

The announcement comes following direction from Alberta Education Minister Adriana LaGrange who said there are three possible scenarios for education as we enter the new school year.

LaGrange has said that the first scenario is the most likely, but an update will be provided Aug. 1.

“Based on the information we have at hand right now, we expect that students will be at school in September,”

The Virtual Learning Academy is a full-time online program for Grades 7-12.

Virtual learning will allow students to work from home through learning tools and remote access to content.

Alternatively, there is the Sacred Heart Academy for students in Grade 10-12.

Instruction through the Sacred Heart Academy will be provided through various methods like online, small group and one-on-one.

“After in depth consultations with staff to provide the best learning, we believe the best place for learning is in the classroom. However, we also understand, with our current environment, there are a multitude of reasons parents may be uneasy or unable to have their children at school.” – George McGuigan, Superintendent of Schools.

To enroll in either virtual program you must be registered in a Fort McMurray Catholic School and participate in an intake interview.

As for students in the Early Education Program and from Kindergarten to Grade 6, FMCSD believes they will best learn through face-to-face instruction with a teacher.
