Construction of Fort McKay’s new fire hall kicks off this month.

The 1200 square meter structure includes four apparatus bays, truck trailing area, offices, as well as training and fitness areas.

Deputy Mayor Jane Stroud called the fire hall an investment in future of the people and community of Fort McKay.

“This project is also a special one for our Council because it reflects our commitment to rural and Indigenous communities. The Municipality’s Strategic Plan identified Rural and Indigenous Partnerships and Communities as a key priority—and this project not only supports that goal but really puts it into action.”

Stroud joined other representatives from the RMWB, Fort McKay First Nation, and Fort McKay Métis Nation for a groundbreaking ceremony on July 7.

Fort McKay First Nation Chief Mel Grandjamb said the project received a lot of support.

“I want to extend my appreciation from the community on a job well done with a combined effort from the RMWB, the Fort McKay Métis Nation and our First Nation jointly working together. I’m very satisfied with the RMWB council and with the commitment from our volunteer fire department.”

Ron Quintal, President of the Fort McKay Métis Nation, said the new hall signifies the next step in fire protection.

“It is so important that we put these shovels in the ground today. I am grateful for what we have been able to achieve in terms of our fire service. This is another stepping stone in creating the unity and infrastructure the community of Fort McKay needs.”

Regional Fire Chief Jody Butz also shared his excitement for the start of construction.

“This fire hall will be a symbol of strength and security for the community. For years to come, the Fort McKay Fire Department will continue to proudly serve their community and the region from their future new home.”

The Alberta government first estimated the cost of construction at $15-million.
