Alberta also reported 121 new cases and an additional death linked to COVID-19 across the province in the last 24 hours.

The death occurred at Edmonton’s Good Samaritan Southgate Care Centre.

80 Albertans recovered during that time period.

Hospitalization remains low with 50 Albertans in hospital, including 13 in intensive care.

Alberta has 1044 active cases, 217 deaths, and 10,632 recovered cases of COVID-19.

Dr Deena Hinshaw, chief medical officer of health, began her live update to extend her condolences to family and friends of Dr. Reynolds.

To date, health officials tested one in seven Albertans for COVID-19, completing 785,361 tests.

Hinshaw recommended all school teachers and staff undergo testing before September and regularly, but on a volunteer basis.

She added testing for youth only if they have symptoms or pre-existing conditions that may be similar to COVID-19.

Priority will go to students with mild symptoms.

Hinshaw will provide her next live update on COVID-19 response in Alberta on Aug. 18, 2020.
