S&P/TSX composite down in early trading, U.S. stock markets mixed

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index was lower in early trading, weighed down by losses in the materials and financial sectors.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 99.90 points at 16,506.86.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 25.25 points at 27,714.48. The S&P 500 index was down 3.55 points at 3,381.96, while the Nasdaq composite was up 0.33 points at 11,265.28.

The Canadian dollar traded for 75.66 cents US compared with 75.79 cents US on Thursday.

The October crude contract was down 83 cents at US$41.99 per barrel and the September natural gas contract was down six cents at US$2.29 per mmBTU.

The December gold contract was down US$2.80 at US$1,943.70 an ounce and the September copper contract was down five cents at US$2.92 a pound.
