McMurray Métis announced they entered into a historic long-term relationship agreement with Suncor.

According to the Relationship Management Committee, it will provide a plan for joint priorities as well as key regulatory applications.

McMurray Métis CEO Bill Loutitt said this is the beginning of a renewed relationship based on mutual respect, communication, and ongoing engagement.

“We had a long period of negotiations with representatives from Canada’s largest oilsands operator on our joint goals but at the end of the day this agreement is a true sign of respect by Suncor and for the betterment of our 600 plus proud members of the Métis Nation of Alberta.”

The agreement outlines the accountabilities of each party in terms of the environment, business contracting and skills, employment and training matters.

On Aug. 26, members of the joint Leadership Committee of McMurray Métis and Suncor gathered at a traditional Métis space near the Clearwater River.

Upstream’s Executive Vice-President Mike MacSween said they’re pleased to enter this new chapter.

“With much to learn from Canada’s Indigenous Peoples, this agreement signifies a concerted effort from everyone involved to work together to ensure mutual benefits are realized long-term.”

Summer students from Métis Local 1935 were also on-hand to assemble a teepee on the space.
