The annual First Responders Golf Tournament raised over $35,000.

The tournament, hosted by the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) and RCMP Wood Buffalo, was held on Aug. 29.

Executive Director of CMHA Wood Buffalo Amanda Holloway said over 29 community sponsors and donors came together for the event.

“We think that’s so incredible considering the struggles that our community has had.”

The money raised will go towards mental health programs and services offered through CMHA, including courses through the Recovery College.

Due to COVID-19 and spring flooding services are being offered virtually.

CMHA noted that due to the pandemic, flooding and an increased awareness of mental health issues surrounding first responders, visible minorities, communities at risk and those feeling marginalized or vulnerable there has been an increase in demand for mental health services.

“Our community has seen its fair share of hurdles and we are already seeing an increase in demand for our services even though we’re not in our space.”

Holloway said the money raised is vital to accommodate the increase in services required across our region.
