Police patrolling "stay-cation" campsites this long weekend

Wood Buffalo RCMP said they will conduct Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) enforcement patrols on the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road.

Patrols will run from the Winter Road to the Athabasca Sand Dunes, which include campsites around Six Lakes, Net Lake, and other sites.

Police said many residents in the region plan on holding “stay-cations” due to travel restrictions and concerns related to Covid-19.

RCMP recommend registered and insured OHV riders let someone know where they’re going, and how long they plan to be away.

Riders should also follow the following safety guidance:

  • Carry an emergency kit which should include a cell phone, charger, first aid supplies, food and water.
  • Let someone know where you will be travelling to and when you plan to return.
  • Be familiar with the OHV that you ride and operate it at a safe and reasonable speed.
  • Share the trails responsibly and be considerate of hikers, cyclists and riders.
  • Remember to properly maintain your OHV and remove any debris that may have built up around the exhaust, in the engine and manifold.

Wood Buffalo RCMP said impaired driving laws also apply to OHV drivers.

If found driving while impaired, the police may charge drivers under the Criminal Code of Canada.

Canada prohibits open alcohol on public land.
