Regional Emergency Services (RES) is sharing some simple and important actions as a part of Fire Prevention Week.

This year, Fire Prevention Week is from Oct. 4-10 and the theme is fire safety in the kitchen.

You can find helpful fire prevention and safety tips, along with interactive kid-friendly games and resources on the municipality’s website.

There are several resources available including a teacher’s toolkit for students in kindergarten to grade 3 and links to Sparky School House and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) websites.

As Thanksgiving approaches RES is sharing the following kitchen safety tips:

  • Never leave cooking food unattended. Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, or broiling. If you must leave, even for a short time, turn off the stove.
  • You must be alert when cooking. You won’t be alert if you are sleepy, have taken medicine or drugs, or consumed alcohol that makes you drowsy.
  • Always keep an oven mitt and pan lid nearby when you’re cooking. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan to smother the flame. Turn off the burner, and leave the pan covered until it is completely cool.
  • Have a “kid-free zone” of at least 3 feet around the stove and areas where hot food or drink is prepared or carried.

The municipality has also created the After the Fire guide to assist those impacted by fires.

According to the NFPA, cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries.
