The 2020 Excellence in Arts Awards was a steaming success according to Arts Council Wood Buffalo (ACWB).

The Oct. 17 ‘Midnight Steampunk’ awards showcase celebrated artists and arts organizations from throughout the region online.

Executive Director Liana Wheeldon thanked sponsors, performers, volunteers, and this year’s Arts Champions for making 2020 a success.

“Thank you for believing in the Arts Awards and for continuing to support the community through this recognition event.”

Recognizing 85 nominees from across the community, the ACWB made 14 virtual award presentations.

These include the Lifetime Achievement Award, which went to Tantoo Cardinal, and the Arts Champion Award to Florence Weber of Points North Gallery.

The full broadcast is available on the ACWB Facebook and YouTube channels.

Despite challenges from COVID-19, watch parties across the region kept audiences engaged and in-tune.

Donna Aubichon, ACWB Rural Art Support Liaison, hosted a watch party for Elders in Fort Chipewyan while maintaining health and safety protocols.

Co-hosting the 2020 Excellence in Arts Awards were local actors and writers Elizabeth Wells and Zachary Barrett.

Throughout the virtual event, there were performances featuring dance, comedy, music, visual arts, costuming, and puppetry.

Ambreen Ehtisham designed and handcrafted in resin art each of the Buffy Awards capturing the beauty of geode rocks with unique colour combinations.

Luay Eljamal, Programs Manager, thanked the winner and nominee adding the region has an incredible amount of talent.

“We also want to thank all the artists and performers who responded to artist calls for this event, and the volunteers who helped while we recorded the show. The Buffys serve as a good opportunity for everyone to reflect on their artistic practice, and be recognized for their contributions to our region.”

Gear Bags and Buffy Stuffys are still available on Eventbrite.
