Wood Buffalo embarks on new FireSmart project

PHOTO. Supplied. FireSmart is a national program adopted in communities across Canada aimed at reducing the risk of wildfire in interface zones where the urban setting meets environments prone to wildfire.

The Municipality announced a new FireSmart vegetation management project in the Wood Buffalo neighbourhood.

Starting Oct. 31, the two-week project includes the removal of all dead, down and unhealthy trees.

Hand-crews will also prune and selectively thin evergreen trees in the area while minimizing ground disturbance.

“The purpose of this FireSmart vegetation management project is to reduce organic fuel in the area, which will decrease the risk of future wildfire damage and increase public safety. This project will treat approximately 2.6 hectares of municipal forest in Wood Buffalo.”

Controlled burns may be visible from the Wood Buffalo neighbourhood.

As is standard procedure, safety officials supervise these burns and crews will work to minimize smoke during the process.

Residents should follow all posted signage and use caution.

Firewood may also be available as part of the project with locations posted on the Municipality’s website.

Work in Wood Buffalo is one of two projects in the urban service area this season as the second begins in mid-November in Stone Creek and Parsons Creek.

The Municpality scheduled similar vegetation management projects, which begin after the ground freeze, in Conklin, Anzac, and Fort Chipewyan this season.
