Residents interested in a career in policing may apply with the Wood Buffalo RCMP.

The detachment’s ‘RCMP Career Presentation’ takes place on Nov. 7, 2020, at the Timberlea detachment on Paquette Drive.

“The presentation is a unique opportunity to meet with recruiters and hear real life career experiences from police officers who are proud to wear the RCMP uniform.”

Corporal Teri-Ann Bakker is with the Wood Buffalo RCMP.

She said she first attended a recruitment session with RCMP’s A-Division before moving to the region.

“Prior to moving to Wood Buffalo, any time we have the public book a presentation based on the RCMP Careers that’s what we call it. So a recruiting presents the career to whoever has pre-booked, and with the pandemic we are doing registration that is mandatory.”

She added there is a maximum of 10 people allowed for the hour-long session.

“At the end of the presentation, they can express interest and they would have to study and book a date and time for the RCMP exam. Recruiting would attend to Wood Buffalo RCMP detachment again on another date and complete the RCMP exam, which is done on the RCMP computers online.”

RCMP can book additional sessions in case more than 10 applicants wish to attend.

Cpl. Bakker said Recruiting would contact the successful applicants following the exam.

She added processing of the application may take around a year to complete.

“It just depends on how often a person has moved, what activities they have been involved [in] their life. That not only includes them directly but family and any direct acquaintances.”

Given the COVID-19 situation, Bakker said the RCMP would examine its protocols in a year’s time if they should make any changes.

The RCMP said officers receive paid training, competitive salary and benefits.

After three years of General Duty Policing, officers may choose from over 150 career specializations.

RCMP also explained how “pre-posting” works in the national police force.

“To meet organizational needs, applicants from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan or Manitoba will have the opportunity to select their home province for their first post following graduation. The RCMP’s operational needs will continue to determine the exact location of a posting.”

Check-in begins at 5:45 p.m. on Nov. 7, with the event formally starting at 6:00 p.m.
