Santa Claus is coming to the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
In anticipation of his arrival, the Municipality will host a special drive-thru reverse parade so residents can see him in-person.
Mayor Don Scott said the annual parade is an important tradition to many in the RMWB.
“This year’s Santa Claus Parade format allows us to come together to enjoy the sights and sounds of the parade from the warmth of vehicles or transit buses while ensuring that public health guidelines are followed. I would also like to thank the team at the Municipality and our great community volunteers and partners for their efforts in creating an opportunity for residents to celebrate as a region this holiday season.”
Spots in the parade sold out on Nov. 23.
RMWB spokesperson Greg Bennett said the Municipality booked 1271 vehicle tickets and 90 transit tickets.
“We are pleased to see the level of interest and support in this year’s drive-thru Santa Claus Parade. We understand how important this parade is for Wood Buffalo and the role it plays in our residents’ annual holiday traditions.”
Despite being unable to commit additional capacity, Bennett said the parade committee will examine if other options are available.
The Santa Claus Parade takes place at MacDonald Island Park on Dec. 5, 2020, from 5:00-9:00 p.m.
Guests taking transit must wear non-medical masks according to COVID-19 public health guidelines.
Attendees must arrive at their selected time when volunteers will double-check their tickets.
Guests must arrive at MacDonald Island Park or Franklin Ave. if they plan to take transit at the time shown on their tickets.
The parade route follows Fairway Drive towards the Suncor Community Leisure Centre and turns left towards the North parking lot where residents may see the floats.
Posted signage and parade marshals will also be on hand to direct traffic.
Attendees must stay within their vehicles or transit bus during the parade.
Public health measures from COVID-19 could lead to the cancellation of the Santa Claus Parade.
Guests should travel with their cohort and follow all public health guidelines.
