EDMONTON (660 NEWS) — With COVID-19 cases continuing to rise — including hitting a record high once again on the weekend — the provincial government is set to announce new safety measures on Tuesday.

Premier Jason Kenney will be joined by Dr. Deena Hiunshaw, Health Minister Tyler Shandro and President of Alberta Health Services (AHS) Dr. Verna Yiu for the announcement at 4:30 p.m.

This comes as Alberta continues to struggle with keeping COVID-19 at bay. The province’s active case count has now surpassed Ontario’s, a province with over triple the population.

The Opposition NDP said Kenny and the UCP has not done enough.

During an emergency debate at the legislature Monday, opposition leader, Rachel Notley said she’s disappointed in the Premier’s response to the pandemic.

“We saw 23 new cases on the day the Premier declared a public health emergency last spring. Today, we saw over 1,500 and today, we didn’t hear from the Premier and we didn’t hear from him yesterday, we didn’t hear from him the day before and we haven’t heard from him for 10 days.”

The #WhereisKenney was trending on social media as many Albertans asked the same questions as Notley. The Premier’s office said Kenney had to isolate after possibly being exposed to a virus case, and has been working from home…

Notley said other leaders in Canada had to isolate but still led their provinces virtually.

Kenney is expected to join Dr. Deena Hinshaw at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister Travis Toews will provide a fiscal update to the province on Tuesday.
