EDMONTON (660 NEWS) – Opposition leader Rachel Notley says more needs to be done following Alberta’s new COVID-19 restrictions.

“Today’s announcement is simply not enough,” said Notley.

She says the new restrictions to private gatherings are not going to be enough to limit the spread of the virus and highlights the need for further restrictions to bars and restaurants.

“In the last 12 days, our case count has fired out of control. Restaurants and bars are one of the few places left where people can gather (…) without masks.”

She points out that very little has changed and there has been no announcement of support for small and medium-sized businesses.

Notley says that Alberta Premier Jason Kenney’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic is cowardly and continues to damage the economy and threaten Albertan lives.

“Based on today’s announcements, I don’t believe that is going to stop any time soon.

“Alberta remains the only place in the country where there is no provincial mask mandate, despite having the worst per capita cases in Canada,” said Notley.

“The highest number of cases in Canada and the worst per capita second only to Manitoba.”

She calls on Kenney to take further action against the virus to better Alberta, not to benefit his supporters.

“This government has abandoned medical science in service of political convenience.”
