FORT MCMURRAY (MyMcMurray) – For the first time in more than 10 years, residents will be able to lace up some skates and hit the ice at Borealis Park.

Starting Saturday, January 23, a new skating pond will be open for the community to enjoy for free.

“With the majority of indoor recreation activities on pause, the Municipal Parks team have been working hard to enhance outdoor recreation spaces and create additional activities for the community to enjoy,” said Keith Smith, Director, Public Works. “It’s been over a decade since we built a skating pond at Borealis Park and are thrilled to offer this outdoor recreation activity once again.”

Weather permitting, it will be open seven days a week until 11 p.m.

Hockey sticks and pucks are not permitted on the skating pond and users are asked to abide by the following:

  • Coming ready to skate and leaving personal belongings at home
  • Staying home if you’re feeling unwell
  • Keeping two metres of physical distance from members of different households
  • Not sharing equipment and other items with members from different households
  • Carrying and using hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol
