FORT MCMURRAY (660 NEWS) – United Way Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo is welcoming a new Executive Director.

Longtime Fort McMurray resident Cathy Steeves will take on the role starting Monday.

“I am thankful to the board for their confidence in me, and am elated to lead such a wonderful organization,” Steeves said. “United Way continues to respond to changing demands in our community and I know that we can move forward to strengthen our support of programs and initiatives that improve the quality of life for seniors, youth, children, families, and disadvantaged citizens.”

In the past, Steeves has volunteered as a Workplace Campaign Chair for the United Way and has been a team member of the Community Investment Committee.

“The board is very excited to welcome Cathy to the United Way team,” said Board President Jordanna Lambert. “Cathy brings a wealth of knowledge from both her professional experience and volunteer achievements. We are confident that United Way will be well positioned under her leadership to prosper in the coming years.”

Waverly Muessle was also recently announced as the newest United Way board member.

“I am a strong believer in giving back to my community in a meaningful way and the organizations supported by the Fort McMurray United Way directly impacts all areas of our community with children, vulnerable persons, and families at the forefront,” Muessle said.

The United Way 2020 Community Campaign raised $3.5 million for local initiatives. That was short of the $4 million goal and down from the $4.65 million raised in 2019.

Community Investment Chair Andrea Hine said tough decisions would have to be made with the decrease in funds raised, but that the United Way is committed to ensuring maximum impact throughout Wood Buffalo with the funds available.
