FORT MCMURRAY (660 NEWS)  — A police officer with the RCMP in Red Deer has been charged following an investigation of an incident that happened in March of 2020.

A release from RCMP states an altercation occurred in the Red Deer detachment, which resulted in the officer striking an adult male after he was arrested for public intoxication and resisting arrest.

The male was then taken to hospital as a precaution and was later taken into custody for a parole violation.

The release says the RCMP want to make sure the actions of all those involved, including the police, are fair, transparent, and defendable.

In March of 2020, a review of the incident took place to ensure the officer abided by policies and procedures.

Once that review was completed, it was determined that an internal Code of Conduct and a criminal investigation would occur to look at the totality of the incident, including the actions of the RCMP and the use of force during the incident..

39-year-old Corporal Kent McDiarmid, a 14 year veteran of the force, has been charged with one count of assault.

He was suspended with pay since July of 2020 and will appear in provincial court on March 21, 2021.
