Alberta reports one additional variant COVID case, 12 additional deaths

EDMONTON (660 NEWS) – Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw has confirmed only one additional case of the new variant in the province.

There are 97 cases of the U.K variant and seven of the South African variant. The total number of variant cases throughout Alberta is now at 104.

As of right now, it isn’t known how many people are currently being treated in the hospital with the new variants.

Hinshaw says Alberta first detected the first variant case on Dec. 15 and when the lab started testing positive samples, the concern of the variant has climbed to 1.4 per cent.

Hinshaw says later this week, AHS will be posting data on all the variant cases, so it is available to all Albertans and she adds they will be doing daily updates on variants moving forward.

Now when it comes to new cases of COVID-19, Alberta has confirmed 195 new cases on 7,003 tests.

Twelve more Albertans have died, with the death toll now sitting at 1,722.

Four hundred and twenty-seven people are presently in the hospital, with 78 in the ICU.

There are 5,831 active cases throughout Alberta.

On the vaccine front, 124,000 doses have been administered and 32,700 Albertans have been immunized with two doses each.
