Fort McMurray (660 News) — The Regional Municipality of Wood Bufallo, as part of it’s ongoing commitment to reconciliation, is commissioning a local Indigenous artist or team to create artwork for council chambers.

In June of 2019, city council voted the project would recognize Treaty 8 Metis territory and the critical importance of reconciliation to Indigenous peoples.

Knowledge keepers appointed from First Nation and Métis communities will support the selected artist or team in the development of the artwork.

Then through a sharing circle, they will approve the final artwork design by group consensus.

Deanne Bergey, Director, Community & Protective Services says “Art has a vital role to play in bringing to light community stories and histories, building meaningful relationships and fostering a sense of pride and belonging to a place.”

Interested artists or artist teams can learn more and submit applications online or by mail by March 25, 2021.
