FORT MCMURRAY (660 NEWS) – Human remains discovered in Fort McMurray last month have been identified as a woman reported missing a year and a half ago.

Wood Buffalo RCMP responded to the Thickwood neighbourhood the afternoon of March 20. Human remains had been found in a wooded area near Silin Forest Road and Thickett Drive.

An autopsy was unable to determine the cause of death, however the remains have been identified as Ellie Herman.

The 35-year-old woman was reported missing by family on October 17, 2019. She had last been seen in Fort McMurray on September 20, 2019.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Ellie during this difficult time,” reads a release from Wood Buffalo RCMP.

The investigation into Herman’s death by the RCMP Major Crime Unit is ongoing and the area where her remains were discovered is still closed to the public while police continue searches.

The press release does not indicate whether foul play is suspected. “The circumstances surrounding Ellie’s death are still being investigated,” it says.
