Alberta to lower minimum age for AstraZeneca vaccine

CALGARY (CityNews) — Alberta is expanding eligibility for the AstraZeneca vaccine to include a lower age group.

Premier Jason Kenney announced on Twitter late Sunday evening that the AstraZeneca shot will be made available for those aged 40 to 55.

Kenney emphasized that the decision was based on growing scientific evidence and with the blessing of Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw.

The move comes just one day after the province reported its first case of a vaccine-related blood clot in someone who had received the AstraZeneca shot.

The patient, a man in his 60s, is reportedly recovering in hospital.

The case marked Canada’s second incident of the potentially fatal vaccine-induced side effect from hundreds of thousands of AstraZeneca doses administered.

Premier Kenney promised more details to be announced Monday.
