CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Since it was first announced last month, Alberta’s draft K-6 curriculum has been met with contention, controversy, and confusion.
But how much do you actually know about the draft?
A collection of professors, academics, and doctors from across Alberta, many of whom hold a PhD, have created a website where all of the public information and expert analysis about the draft can be found.
Dr. Angela Grace, a registered psychologist and instructor at the University of Calgary, contributed to the website and said there are several examples where the draft falls short of previous iterations.
“There’s a significant lack of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit, as well as Francophone perspectives. They seem to be tacked on as add-ons instead of actually being thoroughly integrated into the learning that our students need.”

Grace said the apparent neglect of BIPOC history in the draft while simultaneously favouring a predominantly white narrative is especially concerning.
“So much of it is based on colonial history, with the religion aspect especially. It seems that there is not a rich diverse approach to multiculturalism.”
On the website, you can find videos highlighting misinformation as well as a section-by-section breakdown of the draft, meaning if you only want to learn about the math curriculum, there is a section dedicated to that.
Grace believes it’s important that everyone is informed.
“We need to look at a much broader perspective. That includes academics, that includes teachers, that includes working groups that have a special interest in youth health, well-being, and education.”
