CALGARY (660 NEWS) — If you use Frontiersman or Sabre branded bear spray on your hikes you may need to return them.

Health Canada says some canisters are not spraying anything when used, and that could put you in a very dangerous situation when face to face with large mammals.

So far there are no reports of injuries related to the recall or the malfunctioning of the spray canisters.

Here is the list of affected products, according to Health Canada’s website:

  • FRONTIERSMAN BEAR ATTACK DETERRENT with yellow nozzle in 225 gram and 325 gram containers—PCP Reg. no 26619
  • FRONTIERSMAN XTRA BEAR ATTACK DETERRENT with yellow nozzle in 225 gram and 325 gram containers—PCP Reg. no 28410
  • SABRE WILD MAX BEAR ATTACK DETERRENT with yellow nozzle in 225 gram and 325 gram containers—PCP Reg. no 29114
  • SABRE WILD BEAR ATTACK DETERRENT with yellow nozzle in 225 gram and 325 gram containers—PCP Reg. no 29357

Health Canada also says the affected products can be identified by yellow nozzles and expiry dates of:

  • March 2024
  • August 2024
  • September 2024
  • October 2024
  • November 2024
  • December 2024

The expiry date is located on the bottom underside of the canister.

Affected products could cause safety issues because their canisters do not function properly as they will not spray when users need them for protection against bears.

Approximately 130,000 units of the affected products were sold in Canada, from February 2021 to June 2021 at these retailers:

  • Kodiak Wildlife Products Inc.
  • North Sylva Sports
  • World Famous Sales of Canada
  • Direct Factory Sales Limited
  • Nigava Sports Distribution
