EDMONTON – For the eighth year in a row, the top name chosen for baby girls in Alberta is Olivia.

It’s the longest a name has been at the top of the list since 1980.

Noah topped the list for little boys for the second consecutive year.

Emma, Charlotte, Ava, and Sophia were also popular names for girls in 2020, as were Oliver, Liam, William, and Benjamin for boys.

Baby girls were also named Amara, Amaya, Zahra, Zoya, Baani, Danika, Raya, Thalia, Yuna and Chimamanda in 2020.

Mateo, Ahmed, Bodhi, Yusuf, Zorawar, Arjun, Gurbaaz, Miguel, Abdul and Idris are some other names given to Alberta’s baby boys.

The province says the pandemic played a role in some parents’ name choices, with positivity-inspired monikers like Hope, Peace, Faith, Charity, Joy, Happy, and Brave all showing up on the list of the baby names.

Athletes, music, mythology, and video games also served as inspiration for moms and dads last year.

Names like Kobe, Muhammad-Ali, Beckham, Artemis, Persephone, Dre, Zeppelin, Bowie, Zelda, Eevee, and Atticus were all included on the 2020 baby name list.

The province says Alberta families welcomed 49,030 babies in 2020 – 25,160 boys and 23,870 girls
