Wildfire danger ‘very high’, fire restriction in effect in Fort McMurray Forest Area
FORT MCMURRAY (660 NEWS) – A fire restriction is in effect for the Fort McMurray Forest Area (FMFA) as the wildfire danger has been upgraded to ‘very high’.
Hot and dry recent conditions have increased the fire danger in the region. In the Fort Chipewyan/Fort Smith area, the wildfire danger is also considered ‘very high’.
According to a press release, there are currently five active wildfires in the FMFA. Two are considered under control while the other three are being held.

Approximately 264 hectares in the FMFA have burned since March 1 thanks to a total of 25 wildfires.
“Human caused fires are generally responsible for the majority of fires at this time of year,” reads the release. “Extra caution must be used by recreationalists. Ensure your cooking and warming fires are out, and check your OHV for excess debris around the muffler. It can ignite and fall, causing a wildfire.”
Under the fire restriction, all existing fire permits have been suspended and all outdoor fires currently burning under a permit must be extinguished.
Wood campfires on public land, fireworks, and exploding targets are prohibited.

- Backyard fire pits on private land
- Charcoal briquette barbeques
- Propane or natural gas fueled appliances
- Indoor wood fires
- Open flame oil devices
The fire restriction will remain in effect until conditions improve.
