FORT MACLEOD, Alta. – A prehistoric skull that was once found in a river near Fort Macleod has been laid to rest.

The skull was turned into the RCMP in 1979, which, through the help of anthropologists, found it to belong to a prehistoric senior Indigenous man.

The RCMP gave it back to the person who found it, but it again was turned over to them in 2017.

They connected with the Blackfoot elders who arranged a proper burial for the skull including a smudging ceremony and songs.

The grave is marked with a white stone marked unknown Blackfoot warrior.
