FORT MCMURRAY – Even though the federal election was just announced, a candidate has already revealed she will run for the Conservative Party.

Laila Goodridge, the MLA for Fort McMurray-Lac La Biche, has resigned her position to pursue a federal position in September’s vote.

Goodridge has been the MLA for the area since July 2018 and was re-elected in the 2019 provincial election.

Although the Liberals, NDP, and Green party have yet to announce any nominees, Fort McMurray resident Jonathan Meyers has announced he will run for The Maverick Party.

Meantime, Conservative leader Erin O’Toole says the prime minister is risking the progress Canada has made on COVID-19 by calling an election as a fourth wave of the pandemic strikes the country.

Justin Trudeau visited Rideau Hall Sunday to ask Governor General Mary Simon to dissolve parliament for a 36-day campaign, culminating in a vote on Sept. 20.

The prime minister says Canadians deserve a say on how to finish the fight against COVID-19 and build back the shattered economy.
