CALGARY — This fall, the Alberta Government says Indigenous people will no longer need to carry an Alberta Indian Tax Exemption Card (AITE).
Come Oct. 4, the government says it will begin accepting the Federal Certificate of Indian Status Card as the only form of ID needed for tax exemptions on-reserve.
Bigstone Cree Nation member of council Ken Alook says the card was discriminatory and this upholds their treaty rights and they appreciate this step forward.
Minister of Indigenous Relations, Rick Wilson, says First Nation leaders have been asking him to eliminate the care since he took on the portfolio.
Eligible First Nations people are able to purchase the following without taxes:
- fuel products purchased on reserve in Alberta or delivered to reserve
- tobacco products purchased on reserve in Alberta
- accommodation purchased on reserve in Alberta
