Hospitalizations continue climb as COVID-19 cases rise in Alberta

CALGARY — It was another day of high COVID-19 case numbers in Alberta, with the province reporting a third straight day of more than 1,000 new infections.

The 1,168 new cases of the virus come after 11,565 tests were completed for a positivity rate of around 10 per cent.

Active infections also saw another day of surging numbers, with 9,655 active cases, a jump of 589 from Thursday.

Of active infections in the province, Edmonton continues to lead the way with 2,133 cases, while Calgary is not far behind with 2,112 active cases.

There are now 336 people in hospital with COVID-19, a 28 person jump from the day prior, while 74 people are in the ICU.

Four additional deaths were reported on Friday.

As for those in hospital, 256 are unvaccinated, while 69 of the 74 people admitted to the ICU have yet to receive a dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Of those who are eligible to receive a vaccine dose in Alberta, 77.7 per cent have received at least one shot, while 69.3 per cent are fully vaccinated.

To date, nearly 5.53 million doses of vaccine have been administered in the province.
