Hospitalizations continue climb, 70% of eligible population now fully vaccinated

CALGARY — Alberta reported 1,339 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday after 12,416 tests were completed.

The positivity rate over the last day hovered around 10.8 per cent.

Thursday’s COVID-19 update is the highest the province has seen since May 13 — surpassing Wednesday’s total by a handful of new cases.

Of the new cases reported Thursday, 934 are unvaccinated — for about 69 per cent of the new infections.

Active cases in the province continue to climb, with 12,868 active infections, an increase of 578 from the day prior.

Of all active cases in Alberta, 9,239 are unvaccinated, making up about 71 per cent of all active infections.

Calgary has now surpassed Edmonton for the most active cases in the province with 2,714. Edmonton currently has 2,691 cases of COVID-19.

Hospitalizations increased by 22 for a total of 487 — while ICU admissions rose by seven to 114.

When it comes to those in the ICU, 100 are unvaccinated.

As for vaccinations, the province has now administered more than 5.57 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine.

Of those 12 and older in Alberta, 78.2 per cent have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, while 70 per cent are now fully vaccinated.
