88% of COVID-19 related ICU admissions unvaccinated, hospitalizations surpass 500

CALGARY — Alberta reported 1,401 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday afternoon.

The new case numbers come after more than 12,500 tests were completed for a positivity rate of around 11.1 per cent.

Friday’s case count is, once again, the highest number of daily cases seen since mid-May.

There are now 13,495 active cases of COVID-19 in the province, a jump of 627 from Thursday.

Of active cases in Alberta, Calgary leads the way with 2,880 of them, while Edmonton is not far behind with 2,728.

As for hospitalizations, there are now 515 people in hospital, an increase of 28 from the day prior.

There have now been 118 people admitted to the ICU.  Of those in the ICU, 104 are unvaccinated — or about 88 per cent.

Two additional deaths were reported on Friday.

On the vaccine front, the province has now administered more than 5.58 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine.

Of those 12 and older in Alberta, 78.3 per cent have received at least one dose, while 70.2 per cent are fully vaccinated.
