Alberta reports highest daily COVID-19 case count since mid-May

CALGARY — New cases of COVID-19 have once again risen to a point not seen since before the summer.

On Thursday, Dr. Deena Hinshaw provided a live update on COVID-19 in Alberta as the situation surrounding the virus worsens.

Over the last day, there have been 1,510 new cases of COVID reported in the province. The highest new case count since more than 1,500 cases were identified back on May 12.

The new case numbers come after nearly 14,000 tests were completed for a positivity rate of around 11 per cent.

There are now 15,977 active cases of COVID-19 in Alberta — an increase of 359 from Wednesday’s update.

An additional nine deaths were also reported over the last day.

There are now 679 people in hospital with COVID-19, 154 of which are in the ICU.

Of the eligible population in Alberta, 78.8 per cent have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, while 70.8 per cent are fully vaccinated.

To date, more than 5.62 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered.
