Alberta food courts now checking proof of vaccination

CALGARY — Food courts in Alberta are now checking for proof of vaccination for shoppers who are looking to sit in and eat when they visit the mall.

The change was made this past weekend after businesses raised concerns with the province’s vaccine passport plan.

On Monday, security at malls in the province began checking proof of vaccination to ensure those who choose to eat in, are vaccinated.

“Primarily we’ve designated some seating areas that have certain access points that are manned by security personnel, and when a customer comes up with their food, they just have to show their vaccination proof card and they can sit in the food court dining area,” said Paige O’Neill, the general manager of Chinook Mall.

O’Neill says at Chinook Mall, they now have additional security, and the food court within the mall has limited points of entry to assist in checking vaccination cards.

“So far, it’s gone really smoothly,” said O’Neill.

She adds that it is new for everyone, so the mall is getting the word out and has signs up to remind those who want to eat at the food court that they will need to come prepared.

For Chinook Mall specifically, there is also an outdoor patio area where proof of vaccination is not needed to sit down and grab a bite.
