New COVID cases remain on the rise in Friday update

CALGARY — Alberta reported 1,630 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday afternoon.

The new case numbers come after nearly 16,000 tests were completed for a positivity rate of around 10.3 per cent.

Active infections remain high in the province, as more than 20,000 Albertans have the virus.

Of current infections in Alberta, more than 70 per cent are unvaccinated.

Over the course of the last day, the province reported 14 more people died from the virus.

As for hospitalization numbers, there are now 1,066 people in hospital with COVID-19, 263 of which are in the ICU.

As of Friday afternoon, more than 86 per cent of those in the ICU with COVID-19 are unvaccinated.

On the vaccination front, the province is nearing 6.1 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine administered and should hit that mark sometime over the weekend.

Currently, more than 6.08 million doses have been administered.

Of the eligible population in Alberta, 83.8 per cent have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, while 74.5 per cent are fully immunized.
