Alberta ties record-high for COVID-related deaths reported in a single-day

CALGARY — Over the last 24 hours, the province has reported an additional 38 people have died from COVID-19 in Alberta.

Wednesday’s death tally has now tied the record-high 38 deaths reported back on Jan. 12.

To date, more than 2,900 people have died from COVID-19 in Alberta.

While the new deaths were reported on Wednesday, the dates of the deaths range from Sept. 21 to Oct. 12.

There are now 1,027 people in hospital with the virus, 236 of which are in the ICU.

Of those in hospital with COVID-19, 73.1 per cent are unvaccinated. While more than 85 per cent of those in the ICU also have yet to receive a shot.

There were 652 new cases of COVID-19 reported Wednesday. The new case numbers come after more than 8,600 tests were completed for a positivity rate of around 7.6 per cent.

Of the new infections reported, 65.18 per cent are unvaccinated.

There are now 14,218 active cases of COVID-19 in Alberta.

As for vaccinations in Alberta, the province has now administered more than 6.25 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine.

Of the eligible population, 85.5 per cent have at least one dose, while 76.2 per cent are fully immunized.
