CALGARY — For the third straight day, the province has reported 30 or more COVID-related deaths in Alberta.

Thursday’s numbers come one day after the province tied its record-high for COVID deaths reported in a single day.

In the last three days alone, 110 people have died with COVID listed as either a primary or secondary cause of death.

There are now 1,016 people in hospital with COVID-19, 231 of which are in the ICU.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) President and CEO Dr. Verna Yiu says the situation in Alberta hospitals is improving, but it is still concerning.

“The number of COVID ICU patients being admitted every day across the province has reduced from more than 20 per day about a month ago, to now about 13 to 15 per day.

“This is still a high number because these admissions are preventable,” Yiu said.

Yiu says that without surge capacity, the province’s ICU capacity would be at 163 per cent, which is an improvement from Sept. 28 when ICU capacity, not including surge spaces, was at 184 per cent.

While severe outcomes from COVID-19 have fluctuated over the last several weeks, the active case count of COVID-19 continues to see a steady decline.

Over the last day, 916 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Alberta after nearly 13,000 tests were completed for a positivity rate of around 7.5 per cent.

There are now 13,423 active infections in the province, a decrease of nearly 800 cases from the day prior.

As for vaccinations in the province, more than 6.28 million doses have now been administered in Alberta.

Of those 12 and older, 85.6 per cent have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, while 76.5 per cent are fully vaccinated.
