FORT MCMURRAY (CityNews 660) – A man who was shot by an RCMP officer during an incident at Fort McMurray International Airport died after being taken to hospital.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has provided an update to the October 15 incident.

Wood Buffalo RCMP responded to a call about an erratic man at the airport with an edged weapon shortly after 5:30 a.m.

According to ASIRT, the 27-year-old man was in a taxi holding a large knife to his own throat.

Officers found the man in the taxi parked near the terminal doors on the Departures level and the man got out of the vehicle.

“Available video footage confirms that when he exited the taxi, he was armed with a knife,” reads an ASIRT press release.

A conversation between the man and officers escalated and both a 40-mm less-lethal impact munition and a conducted energy weapon were used, however ASIRT says neither were effective.

An officer shot the man at approximately 6:20 a.m. and he was taken to hospital where he later died.

ASIRT continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and asks anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have video footage to call 780-644-1483.
