Active COVID infections, hospitalizations drop in Friday update

The COVID situation in Alberta saw some promising improvements heading into the weekend.

After no numbers update on Thursday due to Remembrance Day, the province released two days worth of numbers on Friday which shows things are continuing to improve in Alberta.

On Wednesday, the province identified 470 new COVID cases on nearly 11,600 tests for a positivity rate of around 4.1 per cent.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, there were 371 new cases identified on nearly 9,000 tests for a positivity rate of around 4.2 per cent.

Overall, Friday’s update holds steady with the numbers the province has seen over the last few weeks.

There are now 5,745 active infections in Alberta, a decrease of 263 cases from Wednesday’s update.

Alberta’s active case count is the lowest the province has seen since Aug. 17.

As for hospitalization numbers, it also saw improvement over the last few days.

There are now 554 people in hospital with COVID-19, a decrease of 28 from Wednesday. Of those in hospital, 110 are in the ICU.

Alberta Health reporting on Friday seven more people have died from COVID-19 in the province.

As for vaccination numbers, more than 6.68 million doses of COVID vaccine have been administered to date in Alberta.

Of those 12 and older in the province, 87.7 per cent have received at least one dose, while 81.8 per cent are fully immunized.
