FORT MCMURRAY – One person is dead and two others were injured after a collision at Suncor’s Base Plant Mine Thursday morning.

In a statement, Suncor confirms the incident happened at approximately 6:30 a.m. at the site north of Fort McMurray and involved two haul trucks.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm that the incident resulted in the death of a contractor,” stated Carley Robertson with Suncor.

“Two other people were involved and are being treated at the hospital. We extend our deepest condolences to the friends, families and colleagues of those involved.”

No names have been released pending the notification of next of kin, however Wood Buffalo RCMP have confirmed that the deceased is a 51-year-old man from Fort McMurray.

A woman who was in the second vehicle was treated on site while a man was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Robertson added that Suncor will work closely with RCMP and Occupational Health and Safety as a full investigation takes place.

“Suncor has initiated grief counselling activities on site to support our people. The safety and security of our employees and contractors remains our number one priority,” Robertson stated.

North American Construction Group issued a statement confirming the deceased is one of their employees.

“I and our entire NACG family are deeply shocked and saddened by this unexpected and tragic loss of our co-worker and friend,” said Joe Lambert, President and CEO.

“No words will ease the pain of loss for the family and friends of our cherished co-worker but we will do everything we can to support them during this difficult time.”
