There are nearly 65,000 active cases of COVID-19 in Alberta

As Alberta prepares to head into the weekend following a week of historic COVID numbers, data released on Friday shows things aren’t slowing up quite yet.

The province reported 6,163 new infections Friday afternoon after more than 16,000 tests were done for a positivity rate of around 37.2 per cent.

Active infections also continued to climb as nearly 1,400 new cases were added to the total tally. Currently, there are 64,129 active cases of COVID-19 in Alberta.

As for severe outcomes of the virus, there are now 822 people in hospital with the virus, 81 of which are in the ICU.

Alberta Health also reported five more people have died with COVID over the last day.

Over the last day, the province surpassed eight million doses of COVID vaccine administered.

Of those 12 and older in the province, 89.7 per cent have at least one dose of the vaccine, while 85.7 per cent have their second dose.

Twenty-eight per cent of all Albertans have received their booster shot.
