Young child among 23 new COVID-related deaths over the weekend

A young child was among those who died with COVID-19 over the weekend in Alberta.

Alberta Health reporting Monday afternoon that 23 more people died with COVID-19 over the last three days. Of those was a child aged 5-9.

According to the province’s reporting, the child did not have any pre-existing conditions.

Alberta now has more than 1,000 people in hospital with COVID-19. Of those currently in hospital with the virus, 94 are in the ICU.

New infections and positivity rates since Friday have held rather steady from what Alberta saw through most of last week.

The new case numbers are as follows:

• 6,293 new cases identified on Friday;
• 5,407 new cases identified on Saturday;
• 4,186 new cases identified on Sunday.

The nearly 16,000 new cases come after more than 42,000 tests were completed for an average positivity rate of about 37.2 per cent for the weekend.

There are currently 72,368 active cases of COVID-19 in Alberta — an increase of more than 8,000 cases since last week.

On the vaccination front, more than 8.07 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to date in Alberta.

Of those 12 and older in Alberta, 89.8 per cent have had at least one dose, while 85.8 per cent have received their second.
