FORT MCMURRAY – Suncor has released more details regarding an accident earlier this month that claimed the life of a contractor.

Two haul trucks crashed around 6:30 a.m. on January 6 at the Base Plant Mine north of Fort McMurray.

“The incident occurred when one heavy haul truck rear-ended a second heavy haul truck while they were both driving up a mine haul ramp,” states a January 18 news release.

“The two workers in the moving haul truck that was struck from behind were taken to hospital and released with minor injuries. The driver of the other heavy haul truck did not survive.”

Wood Buffalo RCMP confirmed he was a 51-year-old man from Fort McMurray and North American Construction Group released a statement saying he was one of their employees.

The news release from Suncor states the company is deeply saddened by the fatality.

“We extend our thoughts and condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased worker,” it reads.

Suncor continues to investigate the crash with a focus on preventing another tragedy.
