Alberta promises $1M in aid to Ukraine amid Russia conflict

Premier Jason Kenney has announced Alberta will donate $1 million toward “humanitarian aid efforts” in Ukraine.

The premier made the announcement just hours before Russia launched a military attack Thursday.

“We are deeply concerned and share your disbelief at the situation unfolding as a result of Vladimir Putin’s aggression,” Kenney said Wednesday.

While the Government of Alberta doesn’t have a military or international development program, we do feel strongly that we want to show signs of solidarity to the people of Ukraine at this time.”

Kenney urged the federal government ahead of Russia’s military invasion to do more to address the conflict, calling for Canada to provide more military equipment as well as ‘stronger’ economic sanctions.

On Thursday, hours after Russia’s attack on Ukraine, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Canada would impose several measures on the Kremlin in response to the aggression, with some sanctions affecting members of the Russian Security Council, including key cabinet ministers close to the Russian president. .

Canada is also canceling existing export permits for Russia and will not issue new ones.
