FORT MCMURRAY – After 10 years, the MacDonald Island Dance Academy will cease operations at the end of the current season.

According to a press release, when the MIDA was formed in 2012, there was a gap in dance programming in the community.

However, over the years, registration has reportedly decreased as more private dance studios have opened and started operating in the region.

The MIDA is currently managed, staffed, and funded by the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo, which has been reviewing and assessing the MIDA since the Fall of 2019.

A sustainability review has determined that decreased registration and increased expenses have made the program unsustainable.

The RRC believes private dance studios are better equipped to provide local dance programming.

YMM Dance Company will be leasing the space at MacDonald Island Park currently used by the MIDA.
