FORT MCMURRAY – A dozen new brightly-coloured foxes will soon be on display at MacDonald Island Park.

The new sculptures will replace the ones that were destroyed during the 2020 spring flood.

The Miquwahkesis Project, which means “red fox” in Cree, started back in 2014 when Alberta artist Don Begg created two bronze foxes to commemorate the local animals.

Artists and students from the region then painted 28 additional fibreglass foxes for the Aboriginal Interpretive Trail at MacDonald Island Park.

The newly painted foxes are currently on display at the Kirschner Family Community Art Gallery until May 11 and will be installed along the trail in July.

“We are excited to welcome twelve new fox friends to the Aboriginal Interpretive Trail this summer,” said Ana Maria Mendez, RRC Recreation and Culture Manager.

“The loss of twelve of the sculptures in 2020 was devastating, so we are so pleased to present this new group to join the existing foxes on the trail. We want to thank all the local artists who responded to our call. We hope the community will enjoy seeing the foxes this summer!”
