Mayor Sandy Bowman shared his thoughts on the anniversary of the 2016 Horse River wildfire.

He issued his first statement as RMWB mayor, since winning the municipal election in October 2021.

“Looking back over the last six years, what I come away with is such an appreciation for the community spirit that exists in this region as well as a strong sense of gratitude for all those that supported response and recovery efforts, in the early days and in the years that followed. I believe that resolve is still present today, six years later.”

“I also recognize that we are going to experience a variety of emotions in the community at this time of year and it’s completely understandable given the challenges that people have faced. I ask that all of us keep this in mind this week while being there for our neighbours and friends during what is a time of reflection for many of us.”

According to the Canadian Disaster Database, damages from the wildfire were estimated at $9-billion.
